Social Class and Ethnocentric Worldviews

The link between socioeconomic status (SES) and ethnocentric worldviews is well established in the literature, with countless studies showing effect of SES on a variety attitudes, preferences, lifestyles, behaviors. This literature has been revisited recent resurgence Far Right, claims rise “working-class populism,” according to which working class more likely identify right-wing populist claims. In post-Yugoslav context, along turbulent political transformation from socialism, research also shown that “everyday” people’s understandings themselves others are very much stratified by education, occupational status, urban/rural residence, region, pointing marked civic/ethnic identification, attachment Europe, ethnic exclusivism, gender/sexual conservatism. Yet, nature nationalist attitudes still insufficiently understood. this article, we go beyond traditional focus cultural explanations, instead relying cross-sectional quantitative survey data shed light important differences people living Croatia Serbia. We find education remains most robust predictor while age, gender, income, religiosity matter various degrees. conclude discussion continuing importance understanding worldviews, Brexit Trump former Yugoslavia.
